A late switch to Marseille fell through in the final hours of last summer’s window for Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordóñez.

"I thought I was going to Marseille at that point, yes. An agreement was close," he said in an interview with Het Nieuwsblad.

The weeks of negotiations had been "trying" and he had been "really angry" at the time.

"I was able to turn things around very quickly. I no longer regret the failed transfer and I'm just happy to be here. Everything happens for a reason."

After extending his Club Brugge contract to June 2029, Ordóñez quickly reclaimed his place at the heart of the defence. He has played 34 matches in all competitions this season, starting 30.

That form has continued to fuel interest from major European clubs, some of whom would like him to leave next summer.
