Leeds United striker Joel Piroe looks set for a Suriname debut after a first call-up for a pivotal March window, with the nation two wins from a first World Cup.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Henk ten Cate has included the 26-year-old in a 26-man squad to face Bolivia in Guadalupe on Thursday, 26 March, with victory setting up a qualifier against Iraq the following week.
Piroe switched allegiance earlier this year, having come through Netherlands youth teams but not featured beyond Under-20 level. He qualifies for Suriname through his father and has spoken of pride in representing his family’s roots and a desire to help write history.
He is due to join up after Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Brentford. The forward recently netted his first goal of the season in a 3-0 FA Cup win over Norwich City, and could work under former Leeds striker Hasselbaink, one of Ten Cate’s assistants.
Also in the squad is ex-Leeds forward Jay-Roy Grot, who switched allegiance last year after representing the Netherlands at youth level. Signed from NEC Nijmegen as a 19-year-old in 2017, he scored one goal in 23 outings in 2017/18, then left for VfL Osnabrück in February 2021 after several loans.
Now at Odense Boldklub, the six-foot four-inch striker has two goals in 11 games this season and could partner Piroe later this month.
