Barton, 44, the former Olympique de Marseille and Manchester City midfielder, was arrested over an alleged assault. He is accused of intentionally causing serious injuries to Kevin Lynch, 51, on eight March in Huyton, a suburb of Liverpool.

Police were called shortly after 21:00 to Huyton and Prescot Golf Club following reports of an assault.

The former England international, with one cap, denies the allegations and is due to appear on 11 December for a preparatory hearing.
