Johan Gastien will retire after 18 seasons as a professional, bringing down the curtain following Clermont’s final Ligue 2 match at home to Guingamp on Saturday.
The 38-year-old said in a video released by the club that Saturday night at the Gabriel-Montpied would be the final match of his career.
Gastien has been at Clermont since 2018 and the Guingamp fixture, on the 34th and last day, will be his 248th appearance for the Puy-de-Dôme club. The game carries no stakes, with Clermont already safe.
Before joining Clermont, he played for Niort from 2008 to 2013, Dijon from 2013 to 2017 and Brest in 2017-2018. He is the son of Pascal Gastien.
Gastien was elected a municipal councillor in Sayat in mid-March. That mirrors Pierrick Capelle, chosen in Saint-Léger-de-Linières, who will retire once Angers’ Ligue 1 season finishes.
