Manchester United have suffered a knockout blow in their pursuit of Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, it has emerged.
United are clearly prioritising midfield reinforcements this summer, with a number of players under serious consideration.
Michael Carrick’s side are close to wrapping up a deal for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, who successfully underwent his medical today. United have also finalised terms with Atalanta and are now scheduled to conduct Ederson’s medical examination as the next step in the transfer process.
But the Red Devils are not expected to stop there, with at least one more midfield signing expected.
A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Manzambi has admirers at Old Trafford. Over the past one year, Manzambi has emerged as one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga.
A traditional box-to-box midfielder in every sense, Manzambi brings a fearsome combination of physical strength and technical quality. His surging runs from deep are a constant threat, and his finishing ability only adds another dimension to his game.
He contributed five goals and four assists in 27 Bundesliga appearances last term. He has been one of the breakout stars of the World Cup, registering three goals and two assists for Switzerland, who are set to face Argentina in the quarter-final this weekend.
In addition to United, Newcastle were also mentioned as an interested party in the 20-year-old.
Now, Florian Plettenberg reveals that there is an agreement in place between Newcastle and Freiburg for Manzambi.
According to the Sky Germany journalist, “EXCLUSIVE | Newcastle and SC Freiburg have reached a full agreement over the transfer of Johan Manzambi worth €60m.”
“All agreed between the clubs. #NUFC are now finalising the final details of the agreement with Manzambi. Long-term contract prepared.”
“Aston Villa were also in the race following Amadou Onana’s ACL injury, but Newcastle are the clear favourites.”
“Manzambi, who is currently injured, remains fully focused on the World Cup.”
Manzambi has often drawn comparisons to Jude Bellingham, which could represent a case of déjà vu for United, who famously failed to snap up the England midfielder years ago.
