John Barnes has revealed he had prostate cancer and underwent the removal of his prostate, adding that he feels fine.

"I had prostate cancer, they removed my prostate," he told Times Radio. "I am fine."

The former Liverpool winger, who played for the club from 1987 to 1997 and won 79 England caps with 11 goals, is 62 and says he is still fighting the disease.

"The subject is taboo," he said. "Many men refuse to have their prostate removed because it makes them feel less like men. You are exactly the same person and you are here, and I think that is the main thing."

His comments come as a UK screening programme is to be offered to black men aged 45 to 74. Barnes called it "a good thing" and encouraged eligible men to take part.
