After a difficult start to the season, recent weeks have seen Portsmouth really begin to pick up speed, with five wins and two draws in their last 12 league outings.

That's after having won just one of their opening 14 fixtures, and you couldn't be blamed for thinking that Mousinho's side may go down without a fight. However, since their turgid display against Plymouth Argyle, Pompey have shown great spirit and kicked on in terms of points.

January has arrived at a positive moment, and while Mousinho will be looking to add to his group, he will be desperate to keep some of his main attractions heading into the second half of the season as well. Signings are the priority above all else for Mousinho now, in order to strengthen their hand in a bid to survive.

He is confident Pompey will get the required transfer backing from the club's owners in a critical period for his side’s Championship ambitions. He has detailed scheduled recruitment talks with Eisner, with the American billionaire jetting in as his club’s second tier status potentially hinges on this month.

Speaking via The News, the Portsmouth boss said: "There will (be discussions). We have that frequent contact anyway through the calls we have, so it will be that meeting but in person. It’s good to have the owners over as always and it will be a great time to catch up, refocus, look at where we are in January, and see where we can build.

"I caught up with Michael before the game and he came down to the office. I spoke to him after the game about the match and I think I’m going to see him Tuesday and then going into the game on Wednesday.

"With Michael being over, it’s not going to particularly change anything - the funds are available and we have to make the right choices. I know there’s frustration in certain parts of the fanbase but we want to bring in the right players.

"We said straightaway there are two targets that are available in Rob Atkinson and Isaac Hayden. Without going into details, we said we are going to pay a significant amount on their wages. These are players with a click of the fingers we’re told to get it done.

"If there are any other players we have targeted and we think are available to come in, whether it’s a loan or a transfer fee, we’ve had that backing. We’ve always had that backing. It’s something I’m very positive about internally and hopeful about the players we can get in the transfer window.

"We’ve struggled with injuries all season at centre-half and Isaac has come in and done really well. I’ve always felt that we’ve had the backing."

Atkinson and Hayden have already had an impact but Portsmouth could be among the busiest clubs in the Championship in this window. There are numerous deals currently in the pipeline at Fratton Park.

Pete O’Rourke has revealed that Pompey are expected to seal a deal for Hayden Matthews after a fee was agreed. It is reported to be around the £1.2 million mark, which is a record for a player in Matthews' position in the A-League.

The youngster will provide an additional option in the heart of the defence for Pompey, and it could be the second signing they make from Australia amid serious interest in Brisbane Roar striker Thomas Waddingham.
