Real Sociedad’s president Jokin Aperribay has revealed he consulted artificial intelligence before appointing Rino Matarazzo, even though the tool initially advised against him. The admission came as the club celebrated their Copa del Rey triumph over Atlético de Madrid in San Sebastián.
"It told me he was not a good coach for Real Sociedad," he told El Larguero on Cadena SER.
Aperribay sought a second opinion from AI after sporting director Erik Bretos recommended Matarazzo. From the outset, the coach’s grasp of the team and the detail of his squad analysis stood out, and each meeting strengthened that view. He then backed Bretos’s judgement to make the appointment.
Within six months, Matarazzo had taken Real Sociedad from a difficult league position to lifting the cup.
After the team qualified for the final, Aperribay turned to artificial intelligence again. This time the assessment had flipped, rating the coach as "excellent".
