Real Sociedad lifted the Copa del Rey at La Cartuja, edging Atlético de Madrid on penalties, and 19-year-old Jon Martín underlined his emergence.
The centre-back did not flinch against Griezmann, Julián Álvarez or Sorloth, and he outshone Le Normand. Social media filled with praise, and AS notes that his release clause is only 50 million euros.
At Zubieta this week he called the chance a dream he had not expected so soon, and stressed staying calm. He said they would approach it naturally, as another match despite its importance and the nerves.
With 31 on his back and no first-team squad number yet, he already leads Matarazzo’s defence ahead of Caleta-Car, brought in last summer to aid his progression. He had limited chances under Imanol, gained continuity with Sergio Francisco, and has been consolidated under Rino.
He is the son of Shanti Martín, who played for the reserves until injury. He debuted in May 2024 at the Benito Villamarín, and partnered Pau Cubarsí in youth teams before the Catalan stepped up to the senior side. Martín remains with the Under-21s for now, and it may not be for long.
