Jon Martín capped a standout week with a header that put Real Sociedad ahead at Girona, where the game ended level. He was also named among 55 players in Luis de la Fuente’s preliminary World Cup squad, according to AS.
The 20-year-old nodded in Sergio Gómez’s corner at Montilivi to make it 0-1 and secure a valuable point. It was his second of the season and of his top-flight career.
Afterwards he expressed delight at being in contention and called it a source of pride. He says he is enjoying the campaign, feels energised and, despite being 20, leads by communicating constantly across the back line.
He is winning 72.46% of defensive duels, above pre-list names Aymeric Laporte and Dani Vivian of Athletic. He averages 11.38 recoveries and 4.41 interceptions per match, is a fixture in Pellegrino Matarazzo’s plans, and among young candidates leads total recoveries ahead of Marc Pubill of Atlético de Madrid.
In the air he wins 65.92% of balls, ahead of Barcelona’s Pau Cubarsí and Real Madrid’s Dean Huijsen on 58.78%. His passing accuracy is 90.28%, he blocks 0.79 shots per game, and that profile has attracted Real Madrid and Barcelona, though he is contracted to Real Sociedad until 2031 with a €60 million clause. He says he wants to stay as long as possible and is not distracted by outside offers.
