Leeds are expected to be active in January despite a five-match unbeaten run after Sunday’s draw with Sunderland. The move to 3-5-2 has increased the need for strikers, with Joel Piroe a possible winter sale and Calvert-Lewin and Nmecha injury-prone.

Leeds have held talks over AZ Alkmaar forward Troy Parrott since the summer, when they rejected a £25m opportunity. “Let’s say Troy Parrott. Irish international, playing well. Doing really well. Leeds United come in for him, it’s tough for him to turn down, but are you going to play? Really? Are you going to knock Calvert-Lewin out?” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Leeds scouts watched him score twice in Ireland’s 2-0 win over Portugal during the last international break.

He then hit a hat-trick, his third at the death, to beat Hungary 3-2 at the Aviva and send Ireland into the World Cup play-offs.

Former AZ midfielder Karim El Ahmadi says Parrott’s value has risen by about £13m in a week and likens his off-ball work to Luuk de Jong.

Mid-season sales are rarely straightforward and Parrott will want continuity at Alkmaar. Realistically, he will not leave in January.
