Bayern Munich keeper Jonas Urbig has a decision to make this summer. The youngster unexpectedly thrust into the limelight for the current Bundesliga champions could travel with Bayern to the Club World Cup in June, or link up with Antonio di Salvo’s Germany U21 side as they contest the European Championship in June.

In an interview with Kicker, Urbig revealed that he hadn’t made his mind up yet. Urbig’s season thus far has featured far too many unexpected developments. As if the surprise transfer from FC Köln in January wasn’t enough, an injury FCB No. 1 Manuel Neuer led to the 21-year-old receiving eight Bundesliga and four Champions League starts.

At the beginning of the year, Urbig never could have anticipated being thrust into the absolute highest level so soon. Understandably enough, results have been mixed. The eight-times-capped Germany U21 international now has two Bundesliga clean sheets to his credit, but also made some high profile mistakes. He committed an absolute howler against Leipzig over the weekend.

Urbig made clear he needed some time to settle down once the season concludes. In the Kicker interview, Urbig also expressed the hope that the academy side that groomed him for his dream job could yet take the 2. Bundesliga title. If FC Köln wins the second division title, the Euskirchen-native would be the third professional after Pasi Rautiainen (Bayern/Bremen) and Frank Hartmann (Bayern/Hannover) to win both titles in Germany in one season.

I haven’t made a final decision yet,” Urbig said of the decision on the club World Cup or U21 European Championship in Slovakia. “We [club management] will all sit down together and discuss the matter.

I would be extremely happy if FC Köln became champions of the 2. Bundesliga,” Urbig enthusiastically remarked. “I’ll be keeping all of my fingers firmly crossed for them.”
