Jonjo Shelvey is now back in England, desperately looking for a new club.
His career on a downward spiral ever since leaving Newcastle United two years ago (see his personal statement below).
A brilliant piece of business by Eddie Howe and NUFC to get a transfer fee for Jonjo Shelvey and his high salary off the wage bill.
He cost Forest a fortune in a very short space of time as they cut their losses and moved him on.
An ok season at Rizespor in the low quality Turkish league but they let him go this summer, then by ‘mutual agreement’ his contract at Eyupspor ripped up recently after just six appearances.
Jonjo Shelvey was recently spotted on a video released by Toronto FC, which followed Matty Longstaff on a visit home to Tyneside, Shelvey shown alongside the younger Longstaff brother in a training session.
Now at the age of 32. Jonjo Shelvey hoping to get a new chance with Burnley.
‘Jonjo Shelvey is currently training with Burnley in a bid to earn himself a contract with Scott Parker’s men.
The Clarets boss confirmed reports that the experienced midfielder is currently on trial at Gawthorpe following his recent release from Turkish club Eyüpspor.
The 32-year-old made just six appearances for the Super Lig side, having previously made 32 outings for Rizespor the previous season.’
Jonjo Shelvey personal statement to Newcastle United fans after leaving for Nottingham Forest – 31 January 2023:
A message to the fans and club from Jonjo Shelvey
‘I never thought I’d find myself typing this out, but my time at Newcastle has come to an end.
I would just like to take this opportunity to say thank you to every one of you fans that has welcomed me and my family to the city, and to this amazing football club.
I had been at Newcastle for seven years and it’s been the most amazing time I’ve had in football so far. I will miss the atmosphere so much.
I had to take this opportunity for myself. I’ve made so many friends for life on and off the pitch while I was in your great city. Two of my children were born in Newcastle so the Geordies will remain part of our lives forever.
We have loved every single minute of being at that great club. I have to thank the club for allowing me to go and the manager for being a top, top coach but more importantly a top human being.
I will miss driving into Benton every day and seeing the lads but you should all be so excited under the owners and the manager.
Newcastle is a great place to go and play football and I’ve had some up and downs along the way but I honestly can say I’ve had such a great time.
