Brentford have mutually terminated Jordan Henderson’s contract, only a year after his arrival, clearing the path for a possible move to Chelsea.

According to Sunderland Echo, the veteran midfielder is closing in on Stamford Bridge and has been targeted by new head coach Xabi Alonso, who wants added experience after an unsuccessful attempt to prise Granit Xhaka from Wearside this summer.

Henderson expressed gratitude for the chance to return to the Premier League and said he would treasure the support shown to him and his family. He praised Brentford as ambitious and progressive, hoped he had helped during an important period, and leaves with pride and good memories.

Another former Sunderland player, Danny Welbeck, is also said to be on the verge of joining Chelsea from Brighton and Hove Albion.

He is set to have a medical after agreeing personal terms on a two-year deal, with a fee reported to be agreed but undisclosed.

Since joining Brighton in 2020, Welbeck has scored 51 goals and provided 18 assists in 201 appearances across all competitions, including 13 in 37 Premier League games last season. He is Albion’s all-time Premier League top scorer.
