Jordan Henderson says he is proud and determined as he prepares to make England history at this summer’s World Cup.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Brentford midfielder was named in Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man squad announced last month for the finals in North America, a call that sparked debate, though he remains a trusted presence who is believed to command respect within the squad.
The former Sunderland man won his first cap in a 2-1 defeat against France in November 2010, four months after leaving Sunderland to join Liverpool in a reported £15m move.
Since then he has featured at six major tournaments, level with Sol Campbell and Wayne Rooney for the most by an England player. Selection this summer means a seventh, moving him clear, which he described as an honour.
He said he thinks everyone knows what representing England means to him and that he feels honoured and fortunate. His focus is to be the best version of himself, be ready to help on and off the pitch and give everything to help the team succeed.
Henderson reflected that recent years have been a roller coaster, but he has worked hard and made sacrifices to be in this position and is grateful to be there. He added that giving absolutely everything to make the nation proud matters, and that the squad must simply be themselves.
