Jordan Henderson, 36, was taken to hospital with a wrist injury after England’s World Cup last-16 win over Mexico, a 3-2 thriller in Mexico City.
The Football Association confirmed that he will remain in Mexico City with a member of the team’s medical staff and will not travel with the squad to their Kansas City training base.
Footage posted online showed Henderson slipping as he tried to vault the pitchside advertising hoarding at Estadio Azteca. Team-mates gathered around him, celebrations briefly paused, a stretcher was brought over, then players and staff appeared to relax and continue.
On the pitch, Harry Kane said Henderson had injured his arm, and defender Dan Burn offered the same assessment. Head coach Thomas Tuchel said the player later confirmed a wrist problem, describing it as looking bad and quite serious, adding that he did not know the next steps.
Henderson has featured only once in England’s five matches at this tournament, coming off the bench in the 2-0 group win against Panama. The Brentford midfielder was booked late on in Sunday’s victory while warming up on the touchline.
England’s win set up a quarter-final against Norway in Miami next Saturday, after Norway beat Brazil 2-1 earlier on Sunday.
