Jordan Jones has returned to the North East with National League North side South Shields and reflected on a stop-start loan spell at Sunderland.
“I loved my time at Sunderland and I felt like when I got into my rhythm I was really in my stride. The only shame was there were no fans because of the situation with Covid, but I got a lot of love from fans on social media and stuff like that,” he told Sunderland Echo.
Jones joined on loan from Rangers late in the January 2021 window, producing three goals and four assists in 21 appearances before a play-off semi-final loss to Lincoln City. A hamstring niggle after his best display at Portsmouth checked his momentum.
Weeks after his arrival, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus took control and, with former sporting director Kristjaan Speakman, oversaw two promotions in three seasons and Europa League football after last season’s seventh place in the Premier League. “He got rid of players like myself and brought Premier League players in.”
After spells with Wigan Athletic, St Mirren and Kilmarnock, Jones has reunited with former Carlisle United manager Mike Williamson at South Shields. “Look at the setup here, it’s brilliant and I’ve been so impressed with it all.”
