England meet Argentina in the World Cup semi-final on Wednesday, with Jordan Pickford highlighting Dan Burn’s mentality as a marker of the group.
According to Sunderland Echo, the former Sunderland goalkeeper believes the Newcastle United defender has embodied England’s attitude during the tournament. Burn broke into the squad last year after a surprise call-up from head coach Thomas Tuchel, then made the trip to North America knowing his role.
He did not play in group games against Croatia, Ghana and Panama or the round-of-32 tie with DR Congo. He then came off the bench in the round of 16 against co-hosts Mexico, helping secure a 3-2 win at the Azteca Stadium with a resolute cameo.
Burn also appeared as a substitute in Saturday’s quarter-final against Erling Haaland’s Norway, a 2-1 extra-time victory. In the final seconds he powered a header clear from the edge of the area, a moment that drew fresh praise from Pickford.
Speaking pre-match, Pickford said Burn had barely played before Mexico, then delivered seven or eight headers and dealt with an overhead kick by Jimenez. He added that Burn trained well, seized his chance and has been brilliant, and that the defender’s last header against Norway captured the squad’s character and mentality.
