Former NFL receiver Jordan Shipley is in hospital with severe burns after a ranch accident. His wife, Sunny Leigh Shipley, said in a post that he is in pain and being kept sedated as doctors assess his injuries.
The incident happened near his hometown of Burnet, when the machine he was operating caught fire. He reached a worker who drove him to a local hospital, before he was airlifted to Austin, where he remains in critical but stable condition.
Overnight he did as well as could be expected, and she was able to be with him, although he cannot yet communicate. Doctors were reviewing his burns and lungs before his breathing tubes can be removed, and the cause of the accident is still unclear.
She described his survival as a miracle, crediting his will, athletic ability and pain tolerance. He was in a remote area and still made it to the only other person on the property, more than 10 miles away.
She highlighted main concerns around his hands, infection risk and kidney function, with plans to share updates day by day. She also thanked the Burnet community and reflected on the family’s faith.
Supporters have posted messages of encouragement on her Instagram page. The couple have two sons, Swayde and Shield, and Shipley previously played for Texas Longhorns, the Bengals, Jaguars and Buccaneers.
