Jordi Cruyff appointed Ajax technical director from 1 February

Ajax Amsterdam have appointed Jordi Cruyff as technical director, effective 1 February, on a contract running to 30 June 2028.

He said in a post that returning to his birthplace comes with a strong sense of responsibility and pride.

An Ajax academy graduate who never featured for the first team, Cruyff built much of his career in Spain, notably at Barcelona.

He must quickly set about appointing a head coach, with John Heitinga dismissed in November.

Ajax have not won a title since 2022 and already trail PSV Eindhoven by 18 points in the league.

They were thrashed 0-6 by AZ Alkmaar in the Cup on 14 January.

The European outlook is equally alarming. Ajax are 34th of 36 in the Champions League with only 3 points.
