Portugal have confirmed the appointment of Jorge Jesus as their new head coach, with the experienced manager replacing Roberto Martinez following the country's disappointing exit from the 2026 World Cup.

The Portuguese FA announced the appointment on Friday, ending days of speculation after Martinez stepped down in the wake of Portugal's last-16 defeat to Spain. Jesus has signed a four-year contract, keeping him in charge until 2030.

The 71-year-old takes charge of a national team for the first time in a managerial career spanning more than three decades. He arrives after a successful spell with Al Nassr, where he guided the Saudi Arabian club to the Pro League title before leaving at the end of last season.

Widely regarded as one of Portugal's most accomplished coaches, Jesus has enjoyed success both at home and abroad. His CV includes spells with Benfica, Sporting, Braga and Vitória SC, while he has also managed Flamengo, Fenerbahçe, Al Hilal and Al-Nassr.

His immediate focus will be preparing Portugal for the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League before attention turns to qualification for Euro 2028, which will be staged in the United Kingdom. His first match in charge is set to take place on 24 September, when Portugal host Wales at the Estádio José Alvalade.

Jesus' appointment is also likely to reignite discussion over the international future of Cristiano Ronaldo. The 41-year-old previously indicated that the 2026 World Cup would be his final tournament, but the pair developed a strong relationship during their time together at Al Nassr, leaving open the possibility that the veteran forward could yet extend his Portugal career.
