Manchester United have reportedly reached a major decision on a potential late swoop for Racing Santander left-back Jorge Salinas.

Left-back need

United’s urgent need for a defender has been obvious throughout the summer, but it was never more apparent than last weekend, when Luke Shaw endured a difficult afternoon against Ipswich Town.

Abdul Fatawu left Shaw for dead to score Ipswich’s opener, and the United full-back continued to struggle throughout before he was eventually hauled off.

This is compounded by the fact that United are willing to part with Harry Amass before the transfer window closes in a matter of hours, further exacerbating their urgent need for a left-back.

United have been linked with several left-backs over the past weeks including Lewis Hall (Newcastle), Myles Lewis-Skelly (Arsenal), Antonee Robinson (Fulham) and of course, Salinas.

Salinas, still only 19, has established himself as a regular starter for Racing Santander and played a key role in their promotion to La Liga, contributing seven assists along the way. The Spanish youth international is not only on United’s radar but has also been mentioned as a target for Barcelona.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid are also admirers of the teenager.

However, according to Tyrone Marshall of the Manchester Evening News, Atletico will not be signing Salinas, and neither will United.

Marshall reports, “Jorge Salinas’ transfer to Atletico Madrid looks like it might be off, but understand United aren’t planning to move for the 19-year-old today.”

“Has a €16m release clause and has been monitored by Manchester United this summer.”

Whether United will explore alternative options to Salinas is up for debate, but their unwillingness to part with €16m hardly inspires confidence in their pursuit.

At best, United might scrape together a loan deal for a left-back, but frankly, even that feels like a long shot at this stage.
