Chelsea defender Jorrel Hato is set to be promoted and play a bigger role next season, according to Journalist Bobby Vincent.
The Blues are eyeing a new left-back/left-wing-back, but he is safe. The Stamford Bridge club will reward him for impressing in the second half of last season.
Hato was one of the few bright spots for Chelsea last season. After a shaky first few games, he began to find his rhythm circa January, especially in the cup competitions.
By the end of the season, Hato had started earning Premier League starts, impressing with his speed, tenacity, and energy.
Under incoming Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso, the 20-year-old can operate as a left-back, left-wing-back, or as a centre-half in a back three or four.
The West Londoners are right to give Hato this chance to shine. He is one of the few success stories from their scatter-gun youth approach.
Chelsea should still make Lewis Hall their priority for that left-sided role.
The Newcastle United defender ticks almost every box.
He came through Chelsea’s academy, understands the club’s culture, and has already proven himself in the Premier League.
He also gives the Blues the ideal balance between attacking quality and defensive discipline.
His crossing, composure in possession, and ability to invert into midfield would make him a seamless fit in Alonso’s system.
That said, Pep Chavarria would not be a poor alternative if a deal for Hall proves impossible.
The Rayo Vallecano full-back has caught Alonso’s eye for good reason.
He’s energetic, aggressive in the press, comfortable carrying the ball forward, and naturally suited to the wing-back role.
While he lacks Hall’s Premier League experience and emotional connection to Chelsea, he possesses the tactical intelligence and work rate Alonso values.
Hall remains the dream signing, but Chavarria is far from a consolation prize if Chelsea need to explore another route.
