José Boto, the former Benfica scouting coordinator, is under fire in Brazil amid claims he contributed to unrest at Flamengo during the dismissal of head coach Filipe Luís, after a start to the season that already saw two titles slip away.
According to Globo Esporte, the technical director, credited with the signing of Lucas Paquetá, upset figures at the Rio de Janeiro club with the way he handled the process that led to Filipe Luís’s exit.
Tension rose as details of the separation emerged. Boto is said to have told the coach in a phone call lasting about one minute that he was leaving his post, shortly after Flamengo beat Madureira 8-0.
In a separate conversation of around two minutes, he reportedly stressed that players shared responsibility for the departure, shifting the weight of the decision away from the board. He was also said to believe some players were focused on improving contracts without matching performances.
The report added that Boto’s recent actions were not well received by the dressing room or the hierarchy, creating what was described as an unsustainable atmosphere inside the club.
