José Carlos Esteves, the former FC Porto doctor who for years led the club’s medical department, has died of cancer aged 77.
The club said in a statement that it received the news with deep sorrow, noting Esteves had headed the medical department and was honoured with the Career Prize at the 2020 Dragões de Ouro. It extended heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
Esteves served Porto for around three decades, witnessing many domestic and international triumphs and working with players and coaching teams who, like him, are part of the club’s history.
Among those successes were the Penta, the UEFA Cup and the Champions League.
He also saw the club lift numerous Taça de Portugal and Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira titles.
