José Copete has suffered a meniscal injury to his left knee and could miss the rest of the season.

The club said in a statement that the damage was sustained during Sunday’s match against Villarreal, with the defender set to be operated on in the coming days.

He did not train on Monday and the subsequent assessment delivered an unfavourable diagnosis.

After a spell with reduced minutes earlier in the campaign, the centre-back had re-established himself as an automatic starter regardless of system. There were spells when he was the only fit centre-back in the squad.

The blow comes at a particularly inopportune moment for both player and team.
