Valencia centre-back José Copete is to undergo knee surgery after finishing the Villarreal match with problems, putting his involvement late in the season in serious doubt.

Deportes Cope Valencia first reported the knee issue and a possible meniscus problem. While a late return is not completely ruled out, Valencia’s decision to operate means he could struggle to make the final weeks. Further tests are under way to determine the full extent.

Copete’s season has had dips and peaks, yet for much of the campaign he has been a steady presence. The setback comes after a defeat in which he was largely solid, though he might have done better on the 1-1. At times he had been an undisputed starter and even the only fit centre-back, with Pepelu filling in once.

With Copete joining Diakhaby on the sidelines, only Unai Núñez, Cömert and Tárrega remain as recognised centre-backs. Unai has begun to contribute since arriving in winter, initially out of the side but now starting regularly. He impressed in the derby and also against Madrid, at times operating as a false right-back depending on the phase.

Cömert is delivering with consistency, arguably his best spell since signing for Valencia. Tárrega is not yet at one hundred per cent, but is building rhythm that could restore him to the XI. He may now come in following Copete’s setback.
