The situation and attitude of midfielder José Martínez have caused discomfort behind the scenes at Corinthians. The player is still in Venezuela to resolve bureaucratic matters regarding the reissuance of his Venezuelan passport and remains without a scheduled return to Brazil.

Without contact with coach Dorival Júnior and other members of the coaching staff, Corinthians has faced difficulties monitoring the athlete’s physical condition, according to reports. The club sent an activity plan for the player to maintain his fitness, but communication between the parties has not been ideal.

The only contacts José Martínez has had with Corinthians have been through Marcelo Paz, the current football director, and Renan Bloise, manager of the performance analysis department.

Martínez’s situation has caused irritation on Dorival’s part, who is considering the possibility of punishing the midfielder internally, within the sporting context, when he returns to Brazil and reports back to Corinthians.

In a press conference, the coach commented on the Venezuelan’s ‘disappearance’ and made it clear that, upon his return, the player will need to regain his place in the squad.

“A second detail, just about Martínez. This situation that happened, he has to seek a recovery within our own group, so that he can have the confidence to return in his best condition,” Dorival said after the draw against São Paulo.

No intention to negotiate

Although he has shown frustration with José Martínez’s attitude, Dorival emphasized that he does not intend to involve the midfielder in a possible player swap with São Paulo. Corinthians, in turn, is interested in Alisson.

“Many said that I had made Carrillo and Martínez available for a possible swap. That is a big lie, it didn’t happen. I do like Alisson, he was an important player during my time at São Paulo. I want to make it very clear that I have not made any Corinthians professional available, especially because I need reinforcements, I need more players to arrive, not to lose some along the way,” said the coach.

In recent days, Corinthians has opened talks with São Paulo to understand the possible terms of a deal for midfielder Alisson, who is highly regarded by Dorival. Marcelo Paz confirmed Timão’s interest in the player, who was left out of Tricolor’s squad for Sunday’s derby.
