José Melro has left Benfica for Marítimo, the current leaders of Liga Portugal Meu Super, in a late deadline-day move. The Madeira club said in a statement that the 21-year-old has signed an 18-month contract.

The winger departs after three years in Benfica’s youth ranks, switching to Funchal to gain more minutes and visibility at the club.

Marítimo are aiming to return to Liga Portugal Betclic next season, with promotion the target for 2026/27.

This season he made nine appearances for Benfica’s second team, seven in Liga Portugal Meu Super and two in the Premier League International Cup, totalling 451 minutes and one goal.

He had been featuring under Nélson Veríssimo and will wear number 9 at Marítimo.
