Jose Mourinho is set to return to management after being sacked by Fenerbahce last month.
According to CNN Portugal, Mourinho has reached an agreement in principle with Benfica to take over as their new manager.
The Primeira Liga club sacked Bruno Lage after the club’s shock 3-2 defeat against Qarabag in Tuesday’s Champions League match..
The Lisbon outfit led 2-0 after 16 minutes, but Qarabag made a stunning comeback to become the first Azerbaijani side to win a Champions League main draw match.
Mourinho began his managerial career with Benfica in 2000 but left after only 10 games in charge due to a dispute with the club president.
He led them to five victories, including a 3-0 triumph over Sporting CP.
Mourinho lifted the Champions League trophy with Porto in 2004, which led to a job at Chelsea. He won three Premier League titles across two spells with the club.
He achieved a continental treble during his managerial stint at Inter Milan, and subsequently won the La Liga title with Real Madrid.
However, Mourinho’s days of managing the best teams in Europe look to be over, as he failed at Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
He was arguably unfortunate to be dismissed by Fenerbahce and now has the chance to prove he is not a busted flush with Benfica.
