Real Madrid are poised to announce Jose Mourinho as their new manager in the coming days, following the re-election of Florentino Perez as President. The latter had already announced that Mourinho would be his manager if they won the vote, and Los Blancos have paid Benfica his €15m release clause to free him from the final year of his contract in Lisbon.
Mourinho has plenty to do on his arrival, but Perez has promised a €150m bid for a Galactico signing this week too. Already, Perez has announced that Inter right wing-back Denzel Dumfries and Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate will arrive too. Nevertheless, more signings are expected, with at least one more defender and one more midfielder expected to come in.

Despite many pointing to the midfield as the primary area where Los Blancos need to improve ahead of next season, Mourinho feels differently say Marca. He believes that the primary issue is their lack of defensive solidity. Although there is a lack of creativity in midfield, his focus will be on reducing the total of 64 goals conceded in 56 games this season.

Recent days have seen Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol and Riccardo Calafiori linked to Los Blancos, with the latter seemingly a request from Mourinho. He is keen to avoid his side struggling physically next season, and both players are imposing in that regard – both are also able to play at both centre-back and left-back. He expects a left-back and a top central defender to arrive before the end of the summer.
There is little doubt that Los Blancos have been struggling defensively for some time, but the dramatic difference between their play without Toni Kroos has led many to believe that his absence is Real Madrid’s primary issue. As the issue has been ongoing for two seasons, the desire to see Los Blancos act on it has risen steadily since Kroos’ retirement.
