Jose Mourinho responds after Real Madrid legend raises concerns over Inter win

Real Madrid kicked off their UEFA Champions League 2026-27 campaign with a hard-fought win against the Italian champions Inter Milan last night. The Merengues got a 2-1 win in front of their fans, and have already played one of the more difficult ties of their League Phase fixtures.

Los Blancos went ahead 2-0 on the scoreboard in the first half, but the game was much more open than the scoreline suggests. Both teams had chances to score several more goals, and despite the win, Real Madrid fans might have been left desiring to see a better performance from their team.

This sentiment was clearly observable in comments made by one of the madridistas whose loyalty to the club is beyond any doubt, i.e., the former Spanish striker Raul Gonzalez. As MARCA has noted, the Real Madrid legend made his debut as a commentator on Movistar, and analyzed last night’s game as follows:

“The best thing is that we got the three points. It wasn’t easy because Inter are a team with a very well-established structure, while Madrid had several absences in midfield.”

“They got their goals through mistakes in Madrid’s buildup, then they had some very clear chances, and that Inter goal created some uncertainty towards the end. But it’s a good result to start the campaign.”

While it was a balanced analysis overall, it still apparently left Jose Mourinho not too happy. Right after Raul’s analysis, the broadcast shifted to the Santiago Bernabeu, where the Portuguese manager was speaking to the media. He was informed about Raul’s words, to which he replied with a rather annoyed tone:

“It wasn’t all criticism, we did some good things too.”

The Real Madrid coach then went on to give his own analysis of the game and highlighted the contributions of several players. As Raul Gonzalez himself mentioned, the Merengues got the full three points from this difficult game, and that is what is going to ultimately matter. Hopefully, Mourinho will continue to lead his team to wins in the upcoming games as well, and add another UCL title into Los Blancos’ trophy cabinet this season.
