According to Glorioso 1904, José Mourinho has set Benfica’s priority for the rest of the season as finishing second, to secure direct entry to next season’s Champions League.
Linked with Real Madrid, the head coach has refused to throw in the towel after the Taça de Portugal exit to Porto. He has now set a clear target.
With the leaders now 10 points ahead, Mourinho views the title as unlikely unless Porto falter. The focus is on overtaking Sporting, which has become the main domestic objective.
In Europe, he still aims to reach the play-off. Benfica have six points, with Juventus and Real Madrid to come, and the dressing room believes four, or even all, of the points are possible.
In the Liga Portugal Betclic table, Benfica sit third on 39 points, three behind Sporting on 42.
Rio Ave v Benfica is scheduled for Saturday 17 January at 20:30 in Vila do Conde, part of the 18th round, live on Sport TV 1. Benfica aim to return to winning ways.
