The Benfica manager José Mourinho is on Real Madrid’s shortlist to replace Alvaro Arbeloa this summer, and The Athletic reports that Florentino Pérez now regards him as the leading option.
The Portuguese, 63, managed Madrid from 2010 to 2013 and won the club president’s respect. He and Pérez have stayed in touch, often congratulating each other on titles. Mourinho also retains strong support around the club.
Madrid’s brief calls for an experienced coach with natural authority, instant dressing-room command and a track record of trophies. Mourinho matches that profile. Pérez has previously brought back coaches he trusts, notably Zinedine Zidane and Carlo Ancelotti.
Didier Deschamps is also under consideration, helped by his closeness to Kylian Mbappé, though some directors are wary because he has not led a club side since 2012. Some Madrid directors regard Mourinho as outdated and advise Pérez not to appoint him. Jürgen Klopp appears unlikely to coach next season, leaving that option close to dead, while the names of Mauricio Pochettino and Lionel Scaloni are also in play.
Mourinho’s camp have already spoken with Madrid decision-makers, and his Benfica exit would be straightforward. He has a release clause of about 3 million euros, active for 10 days after his final game of the season. There is no agreement with Mourinho and the choice of the next coach remains open.
