Marca reports it is only a “matter of time” before José Mourinho returns to Real Madrid to succeed Álvaro Arbeloa, adding the 63-year-old will leave Benfica at the end of the season.

The report states Mourinho, who previously managed Madrid from 2010 to 2013, is Florentino Pérez’s preferred candidate. It also lists Mauricio Pochettino and Didier Deschamps as alternatives. Yet it adds he would not depart Benfica unless there is a “dramatic twist”.

In a recent interview, Pérez praised Mourinho, saying he raised the club’s competitiveness and provided the template for their European success, including six Champions League titles in 10 years.

For now, Mourinho is focused on Benfica’s meeting with Estoril, when the club will learn whether they reach the Champions League.

He said at his press conference that he will only consider his future from Sunday, 17 May, with a Benfica contract extension on the table.
