José Mourinho, his new coach, has backed Kylian Mbappé to win the Ballon d'Or after the Frenchman hit a hat-trick in Real Madrid's 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad.

According to L'Équipe, the Portuguese coach told a press conference that the game's elite are a small group and, in his view, they are at Real. He added that, for him, one of them individually made history this summer.

At the World Cup, Mbappé became the competition's record scorer with 22 goals, including 10 at this edition, which his coach views as the strongest argument.

Mourinho said the Ballon d'Or should not go to a player only because he won the Champions League or the World Cup. He believes the winner ought to be the kind of footballer who will be missed for eternity when he retires.

The ceremony, organised by France Football, will take place in London on 26 October.
