After Real Madrid’s 1-2 defeat at Atlético on Sunday, José Mourinho railed at referee Miguel Angel Ortiz Arias, alleging two home players should have been dismissed and questioning the official’s level and nerve.
According to L'Équipe, the Portuguese’s most ferocious attacks on officials since 2000 have been ranked by their virulence.
In February 2005, Barcelona beat Chelsea 2-1 at Camp Nou after Anders Frisk sent off Didier Drogba in the 56th minute. Mourinho alleged the Swede had spoken with Frank Rijkaard at half-time, and Chelsea later advanced after a 4-2 second leg. In the weeks that followed, Frisk received death threats and retired.
In the 2023 Europa League final in Budapest, Sevilla beat Roma on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Mourinho harangued Anthony Taylor throughout, then twice called him a disgrace with an expletive in the car park, earning a four-match UEFA ban.
In April 2011, after Real Madrid lost 0-2 to Barcelona in a Champions League semi-final first leg, he delivered an anaphoric tirade, repeatedly asking why his side had not been allowed to play and claiming the match had been drifting to 0-0. Sent off during the game, he received a four-match ban plus one suspended, later reduced to three plus two suspended, and Real went out after a 1-1 draw in the return.
In April 2014, a 2-1 home defeat by Sunderland ended a 77-match league run. Mourinho refused questions, delivering pointed sarcasm that named referee Mike Dean and referees’ chief Mike Riley.
In February 2010, Inter drew 0-0 with Sampdoria after Walter Samuel and Ivan Cordoba were sent off before half-time. Mourinho said only leaving Inter with six men would make them lose, then avoided the media, having already mimed handcuffs on camera, which brought a €40,000 fine and a three-match ban. Inter still won the Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia.
