Yan Diomandé has completed a 125 million euros move to Real Madrid, and a conversation with José Mourinho is said to have proved decisive.
Nathan Campbell, the player’s agent at Roc Nation, said: “The final piece was José Mourinho. He spoke to him in French, which proved decisive. We did not know Mourinho was fluent because he has never coached in France. But his call with Yan in French, about ideas, the game plan and how he would fit into the team, showed he valued the conversation. It was decisive, the key to persuading him.” He was speaking to The Athletic.
The 19-year-old Ivorian winger had earlier been close to joining Paris Saint-Germain before Madrid’s late move.
The report said Mourinho and his staff had identified a need on the right flank, while Vinicius, who signed a new contract on Thursday, Kylian Mbappé or Jude Bellingham provide security on the left and through the middle. Madrid also cited Vinicius’s trajectory to reassure Diomandé about his individual prospects.
The report added that Paris, unwilling to match the financial terms, withdrew on 26 July. At the same time, people close to the player informed the French club of his preference for Madrid.
