Before Vladimir Petkovic took the helm of the Algerian national team, the Algerian Football Federation had considered several high-profile candidates. Among them was José Vítor dos Santos Peseiro. The Portuguese tactician made it onto the final shortlist of three candidates, alongside Carlos Queiroz and Petkovic himself. Now the head coach of Zamalek SC, Peseiro has looked back on that period with a candor that speaks volumes about his passion for African football.

A missed opportunity, but no hard feelings

"It was an honor for me to be considered for the Algeria job," admitted the Lusitanian, who confessed he was drawn in by the Greens' project before talks broke off, never quite knowing whether it was for financial reasons or something else. Excited at the prospect of leading such an ambitious national side, Peseiro believes the FAF made a strong choice by selecting Vladimir Petkovic, whom he was quick to congratulate for securing World Cup 2026 qualification."Algeria boasts exceptional quality. They can achieve great things at the next World Cup," added the former Super Eagles boss.

Ultimately, the paths of Algeria and Peseiro went in different directions. The first led the Greens to a historic qualification, the second took Peseiro on a new adventure in Cairo. But things could easily have turned out differently. One thing is certain: between mutual respect and professional admiration, the Portuguese coach still holds Algeria’s team—and its global potential—in the highest regard.
