His form for the "Ciclón" earned a place at the 1957 Copa América, then known as the South American Championship. He was a substitute for Omar Sívori as Argentina won the title.

He also played at the 1958 Sweden and 1962 Chile World Cups, with Argentina exiting in the first round both times. He finished runner-up at the 1959 Copa América.

Sanfilippo stayed at San Lorenzo until 1962, then joined Boca Juniors in 1963. That year Boca reached the Copa Libertadores final, losing to Pelé’s Santos.

He scored 14 goals in 28 games for Boca before moving to Nacional in Uruguay. Later he played for Banfield, Bangu and Bahia in Brazil.

He returned to San Lorenzo in 1972. Across both spells he scored 205 goals in 263 matches, averaging 0.79 per game, and helped win the 1959 Primera División, the 1972 Metropolitano and the 1972 Nacional.

After a brief retirement he played for San Miguel in Primera D, scoring the club’s first official goal, then quit in 1978. After retiring he became a controversial television pundit and later entered politics.
