Pamplona mayor Joseba Asiron, of EH Bildu, has sparked a political and social row after comparing support for CD Alcoyano with backing for prisoners linked to ETA during the Korrika. According to Superdeporte, he said it made no difference to him whether banners endorsed the club or a prisoners’ collective.
Asiron argued that individuals can air personal demands and that such displays are private initiatives, not the responsibility of the Korrika’s organisers.
Victims’ group COVITE condemned the remarks, accusing him of trivialising terrorism and equating a football club with support for ETA prisoners. The association called for a public correction.
Pressed on the comparison, Asiron maintained that each person is responsible for what they choose to show at public events such as the Korrika, Pamplona’s bullring and El Sadar. He told reporters he thought his point was clear.
At city hall, UPN, PSN and the PP tabled an institutional declaration warning municipal funding for the run could be withdrawn if any acts supporting terrorism occur during the event. PSN spokesperson Marina Curiel reiterated support for the Korrika as a Basque language initiative, while stating her party would condemn any symbol or message that glorifies terrorism.
CD Alcoyano issued an official statement expressing displeasure at the comparison and rejecting the club’s name being used outside sport. The Alicante side highlighted more than 100 years of history tied to values of sport, respect and coexistence, and urged public representatives to act responsibly and keep the club out of non-football debates.
