Sevilla’s recruitment team have conceded defeat in their pursuit of Joselu Mato, with the veteran striker preferring a move back to Deportivo La Coruña over a switch to Nervión.
Quincemil reports that his agent and Deportivo are finalising the remaining details of a comeback to Riazor, where he played in 2016/17, and that the move is imminent.
Despite interest from Getafe and Deportivo Alavés, the Stuttgart-born forward has chosen to return home in the year of Dépor’s promotion to LaLiga. Sevilla will not sign him in this window.
His free-agent status, after Al-Gharafa, appealed to Sevilla’s hierarchy, who have already added Jon Guridi, Juan Iglesias and Arouna Sangante on free transfers. Interest in Joselu stretches back to the Antonio Cordón era. Adrián Liso remains on their list.
Educated at Celta de Vigo and Real Madrid, he peaked on loan at Madrid in 2023/24, playing 49 games and scoring 18. He struck a decisive semi-final brace against Bayern that sent Madrid to a final they won, and lifted LaLiga and the Supercopa de España.
With Spain, he contributed to the 2024 European Championship triumph and was important in the 2023 Nations League, taking his senior tally to 17 caps and 6 goals. Deportivo, not Sevilla, will be his next club.
