The 23 year old has caught the eye with his batting midfield displays, and is blossoming into a terrific modern day box to box midfield player, with the added bonus of that sheer grit and determination to complement his ability.

Josh Mulligan is dare I say it, very much a Martin O’Neill type of player, and being available at around the £3 million mark, he’s a player that in my opinion we should be looking to bring in to bolster our squad which is in great need of strengthening.

We have an abundance of players who can create, such as Callum McGregor, Arne Engels, Luke McCowan, and Reo Hatate, but we lack someone with a bit of drive and grit, and having seen Mulligan in action more than a few times, I believe he’s very much a player who could fully complement and improve Celtic’s midfield and indeed our squad as a whole.

For far too often we’ve been guilty of turning our noses up at players in our own league, in favour of some unknown project from outwith these shores, but guys such as Mulligan could prove to be a more valuable investment in the long run.

Remember the impact the likes of Paul Hartley and Barry Robson made all those years ago under Gordon Strachan and Scott Brown too. All three Scottish boys who made a great impact on the park thanks to not only their ability, but their grit and determination. Mulligan has all the attributes to do likewise.

It’s time we shopped in our back yard and recruit players who have the ability, as well as the added bonus of knowing the league.

Mulligan will of course also know the significance and importance of playing for Celtic, and he could prove to be a shrewd acquisition as we gear ourselves up for a title bid. Josh is attracting attention playing in the Scottish Premiership for Hibs and previously Dundee so he’d have no problems adapting to playing for Celtic in a Martin O’Neill Celtic team.

Signing the best young players in our league is strategically sound too. Celtic have overlooked the Scottish Premiership for too long now while many European teams, notably from Italy have been more than happy to scoop up the league’s breakthrough stars.
