According to Sunderland Echo, former Sunderland midfielder Josh Robertson is expected to leave Brighton on loan before the deadline, with several EFL clubs interested.

Robertson came through Sunderland’s academy from the age of nine and made his Premier League 2 debut for the club before joining Brighton in February 2024 on undisclosed terms, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal.

A hamstring injury struck a month after his arrival, sidelining him for around nine months, and a further hamstring issue then delayed his return.

Brighton kept faith, and in February he signed a new contract to June 2028. By then he had produced three goals and three assists in 10 appearances across Premier League 2, the National League Cup and the EFL Trophy.

Having rebuilt momentum at under-21 level, the next step is senior football. Brighton believe a loan can deliver regular competitive minutes, with League Two clubs currently thought best placed to move, and discussions are ongoing over a temporary exit.
