According to The Athletic, the Canadian outfit believe they can still secure the signing of the forward due to the MLS window still being open until March.

Speculation has surrounded the American’s future at Carrow Road in recent weeks, with the striker potentially set for an exit from the Championship side.

The 25-year-old has not featured in Philippe Clement’s side since 4 January, meaning he has made a total of 23 appearances in the league from 30 fixtures.

Sargent has a contract with the Norfolk outfit until the summer of 2028, but it has been reported that the player has been left upset by the club following a heated meeting with sporting director Ben Knapper in January.

Toronto are confident that the closing of the January transfer window in England won’t have any immediate impact on their pursuit of Sargent.

The signing of Mohamed Traoré by the Canaries could still leave the door open for the USMNT player’s exit from Carrow Road.

The MLS outfit are looking to complete a deal for Sargent as quickly as possible, with the new campaign set to begin on 21 February.

However, it’s believed that the weakened dollar has hurt Toronto’s ability to afford a deal for the striker.

Their current offer of $18 million only amounts to £13 million, so they will need another $10 million to match the £21 million fee Norwich previously accepted from Wolfsburg for the 25-year-old.

Clement’s side are currently in the battle against relegation from the Championship, with the club sitting 19th in the table, just four clear of the bottom three.

Next up for Norwich is a home clash against 22nd place Blackburn Rovers on 7 February in a 12.31pm kick-off.

Josh Sargent solution needs to be found quickly

It is not beneficial for anybody for this transfer saga to be dragged out much longer, as it is a distraction to Sargent’s teammates and disruptive to Toronto’s pre-season.

It is also hurting the forward’s hopes of being ready for the World Cup in the summer, which will be of the utmost importance.

While Norwich are well within their rights to hold out for a larger fee, they have hurt their negotiating power by upsetting the forward.

There is time for a resolution to be found given the window is open until March, but there’s no way that the clubs should drag this on until then.
