The future of Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass is uncertain with his contract at Hillsborough set to expire this summer.

Windass initially joined the Owls on loan from Wigan Athletic in January 2020 before making the move permanent that summer, and he has been a key player for the club over the last four-and-a-half years.

The 30-year-old wrote his name into Wednesday history when he scored a 123rd-minute winner against Barnsley in the League One play-off final at Wembley last May to seal promotion, and he played an important role for the club in the Championship last season.

Windass scored seven goals and provided two assists in 28 appearances in an injury-disrupted season, and he once again stepped up when his team needed him as he netted three goals in the last three games of the campaign to help secure survival.

However, Windass' time at Hillsborough could be set to come to an end as he is yet to sign a new deal, and with speculation about his future gathering pace, we rounded up all the latest news on the forward.

Sheffield Wednesday contract latest

Windass was offered a new contract by Wednesday this summer, and it was reported earlier this month that he was on the verge of committing his future to the club.

However, those contract talks have now stalled, and according to The Star, it is "looking increasingly unlikely" that Windass will remain at Hillsborough at this stage.

Windass could become the third player to reject a new deal with the Owls this summer after goalkeeper Cameron Dawson and midfielder Will Vaulks decided against signing extensions to join Rotherham United and Oxford United respectively.

It would be a huge blow for Wednesday to lose Windass, particularly as he has been a key part of Danny Rohl's plans since his arrival in October, but it seems as though he will be departing, and he is said to have interest from a number of Championship clubs.

West Bromwich Albion are one of the Championship clubs that have been linked with Windass, and Birmingham World claim that the Baggies have made contact with his representatives to assess whether he would be interested in a move to The Hawthorns.

Albion "are on the hunt for a new attacking-minded midfielder who can also play on the left" following the departures of Matt Phillips, Adam Reach and Jovan Malcolm, and they believe that Windass could be the solution.

The Baggies finished fifth in the second tier last season, but they were beaten by Southampton in the play-off semi-finals, and with Carlos Corberan's side hoping to mount another promotion challenge next term, they could be a tempting option for Windass.

However, Albion are far from the only side keen on Windass this summer, and they face significant competition for his signature.

Birmingham, Coventry and Hull interest

Derby County and Stoke City are both said to be interested in Windass, while it was claimed earlier this month that Coventry City and Hull City were leading the race for the forward.

Hull could have a strong chance of landing Windass' signature as he was born in the city, and his father Dean also played for the club, but there have not been any further developments since the initial links emerged.

In addition to the Championship clubs keen on Windass, League One side Birmingham City are reportedly plotting an ambitious move.

It may seem unlikely that Windass would drop down the third tier, but the Blues are set to back new manager Chris Davies with a £20 million budget this summer, and that could allow them to compete financially with Windass' other suitors.
