Josh Windass is wanted by the Scottish giants for a reunion with a former manager, but making the move could cost him a place in history at Y Cae Ras.

Josh Windass has been linked with a return to Rangers, where he'd be reunited with former manager Danny Rohl - but he could be missing out on helping to make history, should he leave Wrexham.

The January transfer window has already seen a number of transfer rumours start to circle, and one of the most intriguing of all concerns the future of the Wrexham striker Josh Windass.

The former Sheffield Wednesday player has only been a Red Dragon since last summer, but his strong start to the season at Y Caes Ras has attracted the interest of others, and in particular one of his former clubs which is now home to one of his former managers.

Danny Rohl was appointed the manager at the Scottish giants Rangers at the end of October following their decision to sack Russell Martin after the Glasgow club had an atrocious start to this season.

Rohl has only been beaten once in the SPFL since taking charge of the team, and a six-point deficit behind surprise leaders Hearts following their 3-1 win at Celtic Park in the Old Firm derby means that an assault on the league title could still be launched over the course of the second half of the season.

A Josh Windass reunion at Ibrox wouldn't only be with Danny Rohl; it would also be with Rangers themselves

It was first reported before Christmas by Give Me Sport that Rangers were attempting a loan move for Josh Windass at the behest of Danny Rohl, with whom the striker worked at Sheffield Wednesday.

This was followed up by reporting in the Daily Mail in the new year, confirming that Rangers still had an interest in the striker, although they did also offer note of caution in that Wrexham would not agree to a loan unless paid a loan fee, and that, "For any permanent move to come to fruition, Rangers would first of all have to reduce their current wage bill in order to get anywhere near the money Windass is on with the English Championship outfit."

Such a move wouldn't just be a reunion between Windass and Rohl. It would also be a reunion between Windass and Rangers, as the striker played for the club between 2016 and 2018 after having been signed from Accrington Stanley. He left the club in the summer of 2018 to return to England, to play for Wigan Athletic.

Josh Windass could make Wrexham AFC history if he snubs Rangers return

The circumstances under which Josh Windass arrived at Wrexham in the first place were somewhat unusual. The striker had been with the Hillsborough outfit for the previous five years, but left the club in the summer of 2025 alongside fellow forward Michael Smith over the club's inability to pay his wages on time.

Windass was subsequently picked up on a free by Wrexham, and he's been reasonably successful over the first half of the 2025-26 season, with 16 starts, 7 goals and 3 assists in 22 overall appearances for the club.

Wrexham themselves have improved substantially over the holiday period, with four consecutive Championship wins since Boxing Day lifting them to 9th place in the Championship, just a point shy of the play-off places, and with good form behind them.

This makes any decision to move back north of the border an extremely difficult one for the player. The appeal of a reunion with both Rohl and his former club is tempting, and Rangers' revival under their new manager could yet result in them launching an assault on the SPFL title, which could in turn mean Champions League football at Ibrox next season.

But Wrexham could be on the verge of something historic. Their recent upswing in form makes the possibility of Premier League football start to look very real indeed. They're the only one of Wales' big three clubs, alongside Cardiff City and Swansea City, never to have played in the English top-flight, and being part of that - as well as the project that has been undertaken at the club under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac - makes this a very exciting time to be at Y Caes Ras.

Windass could make himself part of a historic campaign, should he choose to stay in Wales. Turning 32 years of age this week, the only honour of his career so far came prior to Danny Rohl's arrival at Sheffield Wednesday, as part of the team that won the 2023 League One play-offs, where he scored the winning goal at Wembley against Barnsley in the last minute of extra-time to take them up.

But, in terms of career achievements, even that would pale in comparison with being a pivotal member of a Wrexham team challenging for a place in the Premier League. He may be better off staying where he is, until at least the end of this season.
