Windass enjoyed a successful individual campaign, notching 16 goals and five assists in 41 Championship appearances, but it wasn't enough to spearhead the Red Dragons to a play-off spot.

Phil Parkinson's men instead had to settle for a seventh-place finish and will have to wait at least another year before landing a top-six spot in the second tier.

Meanwhile, Tuchel's England are set to face Croatia, Ghana, and Panama in the group stage of the World Cup.

Windass ended the season in good form, scoring in Wrexham's 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough on the final day of the Championship campaign.

The forward also notched a brace during a 2-0 victory over Stoke City on 18 April.

Meanwhile, Tuchel has made some bold England selection calls, such as leaving attacking midfielders Cole Palmer and Phil Foden out of his squad.

Real Madrid right back Trent Alexander-Arnold, formerly of Liverpool, has also been omitted, with Tino Livramento and Reece James preferred.

Taking to Instagram on Thursday, Windass jokingly addressed his own selection snub as he posted an AI-generated image of himself in an England shirt, alongside the caption: "Disappointed, to say the least. Good luck, lads."

The 32-year-old's joke attracted a comment from his former Wrexham teammate, James McClean, who said: "Robbery."

McClean helped the Red Dragons win consecutive promotions from League Two to the Championship before returning to his first club, Derry City, in January.

The former Wigan Athletic man hasn't featured for Derry since being sent off in a 2-2 draw with Dundalk on 10 April, courtesy of a serious hip issue.

Eberechi Eze among former EFL stars in England World Cup squad

Windass has jokingly shared his disappointment at being left out of the England World Cup squad, which, unsurprisingly, doesn't include any current Championship, League One, or League Two players.

However, the EFL can once again be proud that several Three Lions stars, who will be representing their country on the biggest stage, have previously played in the fourth, third, or second tiers.

One such example is Eberechi Eze, who has won the Premier League title with Arsenal this season and could go on to win the Champions League at the end of the month.

The gifted attacking midfielder shone in the Championship for Queens Park Rangers before joining Crystal Palace in a big-money move in 2020.

England's backline also includes former EFL aces, as James enjoyed a loan spell with Wigan in 2018/19, whereas centre-back Ezri Konsa previously represented Charlton Athletic and Brentford in League One and the second tier, respectively.

The Three Lions' forward line is also stacked with former EFL talent, as Ivan Toney established his prolific credentials with Peterborough United, while Ollie Watkins is an Exeter City academy graduate.

Meanwhile, James Trafford was arguably the greatest Championship goalkeeper in modern times when he maintained 29 clean sheets for Burnley in the 2024/25 season.
