Josko Gvardiol has been linked with a move away from Manchester City this summer.
Real Madrid were reportedly interested in Gvardiol as they seek reinforcement at left-back, but they have now signed Marc Cucurella from Chelsea instead.
He has also been linked with Bayern Munich, but the Bundesliga champions have yet to make a formal move.
Journalist Florian Plettenberg now reports that the Croatian defender has signed a new deal with City, ending speculation about his future.
The 24-year-old’s current deal expires in 2028, but he is now set to extend it until the summer of 2023.
Gvardiol joined City from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig in 2023 and has emerged as a vital player for them. He won the club’s player of the season award in 2024-25.
The Croatia international has made 122 appearances across all competitions, chipping in with 23 goal involvements for City, while winning six titles.
He struggled with injuries last season, missing 30 games due to fitness concerns.
Marc Guehi and Abdukodir Khusanov became the first-choice centre-back pairing in his absence, while Nico O’Reilly held firm to the left-back role.
While it remains to be seen whether Gvardiol will regain his place in the starting line-up, his contract extension could strengthen City’s position in this summer’s transfer window.
The Cityzens want to strengthen their squad with the addition of a right-back and a central midfielder. They could also sign a winger if Savinho leaves.
Gvardiol’s departure would have affected their plans as they would have been forced to sign a new centre-back to replace him.
