In an interview with L’Équipe published this afternoon, former French international midfielder Josuha Guilavogui has confirmed that he will be leaving Wolfsburg at the end of his contract this summer, with his next destination set to be outside of Europe.
The former Saint-Étienne man had been linked by L’Équipe themselves with a move to Saudi Arabia – specifically, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Shabab – as well as two Turkish sides in Beşiktaş and Adana Demirspor.
Guilavogui indicates that he has made the decision to leave as he wants to find a project with greater playing time, even if he is grateful to Wolfsburg for their faith in him after his tough spell at Atlético Madrid. He points out that the club is where he “learnt how to be a professional footballer”, and that he is grateful for the love supporters have shown him.
Although he does not know what his next destination will be, the midfielder does indicate that a move to Saudi Arabia is a possibility. Remaining in the Bundesliga could have been an option too, he says, but he would not have wanted to face Wolfsburg. “I think my time in Europe is probably over”.
Guilavogui has been with the Bundesliga side for the past nine seasons, punctuated by a brief loan spell at Bordeaux last season. The 32-year-old has made over 250 appearances with the club, and notably lifted the German cup in 2015. The match against Hertha Berlin is set to be his final one for Wolfsburg.
